Money in Santo Domingo: Pesos, Dollars, Cards, ATMs and Tips
Prepare everyday payments in Santo Domingo: compare cash and cards, check currencies and withdrawal costs, read restaurant bills and plan money for excursions.

Pesos or dollars? Read the price first
A dollar sign alone can be ambiguous: ask whether a price is DOP or USD. If paying a peso bill in dollars, agree the conversion and the currency of your change before handing over cash. Compare the complete amount, not just a familiar-looking number. The trip-budget guide helps calculate costs; this guide explains how to pay them.
Arrange your first payments before landing
Confirm how you will pay for your first journey and whether anything remains payable on arrival. The SDQ arrival guide and airport-transfer page help organise that journey. Agree the full fare, currency, payment method and any waiting or stopping charges. Do not assume a driver has a card terminal or change for a large note.
Cards: check acceptance and the transaction currency
Ask about your particular card before ordering or buying. A contactless symbol does not promise every foreign card or phone wallet will work. If a terminal offers conversion into your home currency, inspect the rate and charges before choosing; paying in the original local currency leaves conversion to your card arrangements. Your issuer's fees still matter. Keep the receipt and check the posted transaction.
ATMs and exchange: compare the amount you receive
Check your card's overseas withdrawal conditions before travelling. An ATM operator's charge, your issuer's fee and currency conversion can be separate costs; credit-card cash withdrawals may have additional charges. Read the screen before confirming and cancel if the terms are unclear. For cash exchange, ask how many pesos you receive after all charges. No bank, machine or counter is guaranteed cheapest. Use a well-lit bank location, shield your PIN and refuse unsolicited help.
Restaurant bills and tips are separate checks
Ask whether menu prices include the charges that will appear on the bill. Check items, quantities, currency and any tax or service lines before deciding on an additional gratuity. Do not automatically add the same service amount twice or assume a charge reaches a particular employee. The food guide helps choose meals; the food and rum experience lists its own inclusions and exclusions. There is no universal tipping amount for every situation.
Carry cash for your actual excursion
Use the day-trip comparison to choose the outing, then list only your uncovered spending. Drinks, optional purchases and gratuities are different from the booked tour charge. On a Boca Chica beach day, confirm beach services and extras before using them. Arrange suitable smaller notes where practical; do not rely on a beach vendor or boat stop having change, a terminal or an ATM.
Agree transport and shopping payments in advance
For a city journey, confirm whether the quote is per vehicle or person, which currency applies and how payment works; the transport guide explains the options. For purchases, inspect the total and request a receipt before leaving. The souvenir guide helps compare products. Never treat a displayed starting price or a message without confirmed details as a final booking.
Keep a backup without carrying everything
Carry an amount suited to the day and keep a backup card separately. Check access to your bank's app and verification messages before departure; save contact and booking details offline. The packing guide helps organise a light day bag. If a payment fails, check its status before retrying to avoid an accidental duplicate. For a lost card, use your issuer's blocking process promptly. Never share PINs or one-time security codes with a seller or guide.
Questions about this itinerary
Can I use US dollars everywhere?
No. Confirm acceptance, conversion and change before paying. A USD tour quote does not establish dollar acceptance at unrelated businesses.
How much cash should I carry?
Add the payments and extras you expect for that day, with a modest contingency. Avoid treating the whole trip budget as walking-around cash.
Does choosing pesos eliminate card fees?
No. The transaction currency and your issuer's charges are separate. Review your own card terms.
Are tips included in my tour?
Read that tour's current inclusions and exclusions and confirm the booking. Do not infer the answer from another experience or a restaurant bill.

Experiences for this itinerary
Confirm the payment before the experience
Compare suitable experiences, then ask for the total for your date and party, quoted currency, accepted payment method, inclusions and optional extras. A request is not a confirmed booking.
