Why go
The offshore reef keeps the water waist-deep and calm, perfect for kids. Weekdays are relaxed; Sundays fill up with capitaleño families, music and fried-fish stands.
Getting there
About 35 minutes from the Colonial Zone by car, or 10 minutes from Las Américas Airport — great on a first or last day.
Why Boca Chica is the capital's beach
Boca Chica is the closest proper beach to Santo Domingo. A coral reef closes off the bay, so the water stays shallow, calm and turquoise for a long way out — ideal for families and weak swimmers. On weekends it fills with capitaleños, which makes it lively and very Dominican.
Things to do
Swim and float in the reef-protected lagoon, wade out to the mangrove islet of La Matica, rent a kayak or paddleboard, snorkel along the reef edge or take a glass-bottom boat. Beach restaurants rent loungers and umbrellas if you order food.
What to eat
Fried fish with tostones and avocado salad is the classic Boca Chica lunch, followed by a frío-frío (shaved ice) or fresh coconut. Agree on the price and fish weight before ordering.
Weekdays vs weekends
Weekdays are quiet with plenty of space. Saturdays and Sundays bring music, vendors and crowds — fun if you want atmosphere, less so if you want calm.
Getting there
Boca Chica is about 30 km east of the Colonial Zone and only around 10 minutes from Las Américas airport, which makes it a popular first or last stop. Combine it with your airport transfer on arrival or departure day.
