The short answer
December to April: drier, slightly cooler and the most popular time for sightseeing and boat trips. May to November: hotter and more humid with short tropical showers, fewer visitors and often better hotel prices.
Month by month
Dec–Feb: pleasant, breezy, the coolest nights. Mar–Apr: dry and sunny; Easter week (Semana Santa) is very busy at beaches. May–Jun: heat and humidity rise, first rains. Jul–Aug: hot, lively summer, local holidays. Sep–Oct: the peak of hurricane season and the wettest months. Nov: rains ease and temperatures become more comfortable. Plan a flexible Santo Domingo day when it rains.
Hurricane season
The Atlantic hurricane season officially runs from 1 June to 30 November, with the highest risk usually from August to October. Most days are fine, but check forecasts, consider travel insurance and keep plans flexible for boat trips.
Events worth planning around
Carnival parades take place on Sundays in February, with a big parade around Independence Day (27 February). The Santo Domingo Merengue Festival is traditionally held in summer; dates vary by year.
Best time for each activity
Colonial Zone walks: any month, early morning or late afternoon. Saona and Catalina: December to April for the calmest seas. Jarabacoa: December to March for cooler, drier trails. Beaches near the city: weekdays year-round.
What to pack
Light, breathable clothes, a hat, reef-safe sunscreen, a light rain jacket from May to November, and clothes that cover shoulders and knees for churches.
