The day

Leave around 6:00, drive 2 hours to Bayahibe, then speedboat to Saona. Lunch and open bar on the beach, and a catamaran ride back via the natural pool. Home by 18:30.

Good to know

Bring reef-safe sunscreen and a waterproof phone case. Don't lift the starfish out of the water — guides will show you how to see them safely.

About Isla Saona

Saona is the country's largest offshore island, part of the protected Parque Nacional del Este. It has long palm-lined beaches, mangroves, the small fishing settlement of Mano Juan and a natural swimming pool — a shallow sandbar in open sea where starfish can often be seen.

How a typical day works

Boats leave from Bayahibe in the morning. Most trips go out by speedboat or catamaran, stop at the natural pool, spend the middle of the day on a Saona beach with a buffet lunch, and return the other way in the afternoon. From Santo Domingo, add about 2 hours each way by road.

What to bring

Reef-safe sunscreen, hat, sunglasses, swimwear, a towel, a dry bag for your phone and some cash for drinks or tips. Water shoes help at the natural pool.

Protecting the park

Look at starfish without lifting them out of the water — it harms them. Take your rubbish back, and choose operators that respect park rules and group limits.

Planning from Santo Domingo

Saona is a long but rewarding day: expect 5:30–6:30am pickup and evening return. If you are flying in, spend your first night in the capital and book an airport transfer so you are rested for the early start. Before finalizing your dates, compare how many days to spend in Santo Domingo. Compare Saona with other day trips.

Questions

It's a full day (about 12 hours) but most of the travel is in air-conditioned comfort, and the island is worth it.
