Santo Domingo is the oldest European city in the Americas. Its Colonial Zone — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — holds the first cathedral, the first fortress and the first paved street of the New World, all within a few walkable blocks.
Beyond the old town, the capital hides limestone caves and turquoise lagoons at Los Tres Ojos, a lively seafront Malecón and neighborhoods where merengue and bachata spill out of every colmado on a Friday night.
Day trips reach the calm beach of Boca Chica, Bayahibe and Saona Island. Altos de Chavón is farther east inside Casa de Campo in La Romana, about 1 hour 45 minutes from Santo Domingo.
