What to see
St. Stanislaus church, the amphitheater inaugurated by Frank Sinatra in 1982, the Regional Archaeological Museum and the viewpoint over the Chavón River.
From Santo Domingo
About 1 hour 45 minutes. Combine it with lunch at the Casa de Campo Marina for a relaxed day.
A Mediterranean village built in the 1970s
Altos de Chavón is not in Santo Domingo. It sits on a cliff above the Chavón River inside the Casa de Campo resort in La Romana and was built from the late 1970s by Dominican craftsmen, inspired by 16th-century Mediterranean villages.
What to see
The Iglesia de San Estanislao with its cobbled square, the Regional Archaeological Museum with Taíno artefacts, artisan workshops and galleries, and the 5,000-seat Greek-style amphitheatre that has hosted major international concerts. The viewpoint over the river — where scenes from well-known films were shot — is the highlight.
Combine it with
A boat trip on the Chavón River, lunch in the village, a stop at the Casa de Campo marina, or an afternoon on the beach at Bayahibe or Dominicus, about 20–30 minutes away.
Practical tips
Non-resort visitors pay an entry fee (approx. in US dollars) at the Casa de Campo gate; bring ID. The village is mostly flat stone paving, and late afternoon has the best light for photos.
Getting there
About 1 h 45 min east of Santo Domingo by the Autovía del Este, or 20 minutes from La Romana airport (LRM). Visitors landing at SDQ can book an airport transfer and stop at Altos de Chavón on the way to the east coast.
